Things to see on the Ashby Canal
Ever wondered what happened to those Terrapins that were bought back in the 90’s during the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles craze? Well guess what! they are making a comeback, there are Turtles in the Ashby Canal.
Yesterday 8th June 2018 whilst on holiday on the Midland Mallard Narrowboat a most unusual creature was spotted basking on a log. The location of this log and Turtle will remain a secret for now but will be given to holiday makers booking a stay on the Midland Mallard. click here to book.
Canal boat holidays on the Ashby canal always throw up unusual sights such as snake skin, water voles, birds of pray and weird and wonderful fish. Sturgeon have been found but none so as exotic as this!
Normally found in North America Terrapins can grow up to about the size of a dinner-plate. This one was. Turtles are classed as an invasive species. There has been lots of work carried out by the Canal and River Trust trying to eradicate Turtles so it is even more of a surprise they are still being found. However they continue to survive in the canals and rivers of the UK
